Trying to eat the Malaysian way

Ariel had a friend down from Hong Kong and it’s her 1st Β visit. So, naturally as Malaysians, we’d show our friends from out of town our number 1 attraction – food. Here starts our journey of eating like a Malaysian.

The 6 meal path

It was said that we Malaysians eat a lot. Instead of 4 meals a day, we can eat up to 6 meals a day. This includes:

  1. Breakfast
  2. Morning tea
  3. Lunch
  4. Afternoon tea
  5. Dinner
  6. Support (better known as mamak)

Starting with the morning, we went for our national dish; nasi lemak (fat rice – litteral translation), at Village Park in Damansara Uptown. It was my 1st visit to this place too and after eating my first spoon of rice, I understood right away the attraction. The rice was very fragrant and the sambal (pronounced sum-bal) was just nice.

Unfortunately, I had to avoid the fried chicken because my sore throat wasn’t giving up on me. Damn you! πŸ™

Morning tea – I think

After we took some time to kill and digest, we went off to SS15, Subang Jaya. I’m not a die-hard food hunter, however Hawk brought us to another food gem I never knew about, though Ariel did. We took our friend to have some rojak (mixed fruit) and cendol (traditional dessert).

Once again, I had to avoid the rojak because I was concerned the sauce would irritate my throat too much. And why do I care so much for my throat? Well, I’ve still meetings to attend the coming week and I don’t want to mime my clients later.

I did have some coconut next door and it was really refreshing. Plus, there was a lot of the coconut meat to eat. By the end of that, I was already full to the brim and I knew this was enough for lunch.

No room for lunch

Our earlier meals were still lingering in our stomachs. So we decided to take our time in Aquaria. And this was my 1st time, watching the feeding session at the main hall. However, me and Ariel with our backs to the wall could only catch glimpses of the fishes. Or, the much larger ones like the stingray, sea turtle and sand tiger shark. The shark was as big as the diver?!

Skipping lunch, we chilled at the food court and took in some ais kacang aka ABC (air batu campur), otherwise known; mixed ice shaving. This was another meal I evaded because of the sugar content found in this dessert.

The rest considered dropping into Pavillion or Sungei Wang, just to show our friend what those places were like, but I had to suggest for us to go back. It wasn’t so much of my throat but my body was feeling aches and I felt like I had chills once in awhile.

Preparing for dinner

After resting up, we headed over to Bangsar for some banana leaf rice. We found a great parking right in front of the Nirvana restaurant – wooohooo! It was already quite busy but we got seats in less than 10 minutes.

The mutton curry here is spicier than the one I frequent at Jalan 222. But I’ve to admit the deep fried bitter gourd here is tastier. So I pretty much killed my throat in the night.

Ending the night with mamak

Once we were done checking out both Bangsar Village centres, we headed on over to William’s for supper. The #1 dish we’ve introduced to most of our overseas friends here is the cheese naan. And we always tell them it was a must to eat it after dipping into the condensed milk. No questions asked – no matter how disgusting your friends may think it is. Because you’ll see their face light up and admit how good it is later. πŸ˜€

So that’s 5 out of 6 meals, as we tried our best to eat the Malaysian way. If we maybe had less rojak and cendol, our bloated stomachs would’ve some room for fried koay teow. Or, maybe we went wrong somewhere else? Hmm…

Pursuing Happyness

Just completed watching the Pursuit of Happyness produced by Will Smith. It was one of those films for me like Paying It Forward. Relating to real life issues and what if scenarios. Except this was more about how life is when you’re living by the end of your wallet, with a son to care and what it takes for you to become happy.

It’s difficult to imagine what it would be like to lose all of what you have, when you only had a quarter of what you may have wanted.

This film to me delivered an important lesson that money (as much as we hate it at times) makes the world work. Without money, you’ve no roof over your head, you’re constantly stressed tomorrow, you’d almost do anything to make amends and it pushes you to your limits.

I know my parents have worked hard. I feel terrible having to still need their support. I worry about whether what I earn is enough. And when I was watching Chris Gardner, my only thought was “I never want to be in that situation”.

Hitting a real low

In our economical condition, where properties are through the roof, children are spending more than saving, both parents are forced to work and many graduates say it’s tough looking for a job, what would our children’s future be if we don’t start now.

Change is good. Good change is for the better.

Do you know what change is better for you?

From a mall to another mall

We were on a mall frenzy today. First, it was off to the new Setia City Mall in Setia Alam. Using the NKVE, it took us no more than 15 minutes to get there. When we arrived, I noticed the surrounding land was still in heavy development. You’d not miss the mall from the road because it had huge open space around it being developed and it was the only building there. Plus, its exterior design is uncommon.

Told ya it was uncommon

We commuted all the way there because UNIQLO had a special opening sale for selected items. One of it Ariel calls; jeggings. Its leggings but the fabric used is similar to jeans. And it did look like them!

Lucky for me, they were also having special prices on their plain t-shirts. They were only RM9.90 than the standard RM19.90. These were great because I could wear them either at home or even out. Bought 5 pieces – win!

Then the moment we walked out of UNIQLO, not far down from it, we entered a shop called; Typo. It was owned by Cotton On, but selling stationary stuff. We found some neat items to be used during our wedding, so we just bought them.

Thus, total damage at this point was already RM388.

Back to familiar territory

One of the things me and Ariel talked about on our way back from Setia Alam was, would we consider living there? Because it’s a far distance to travel especially if your job is located in Kuala Lumpur. And my answer was, if you were to live in an area that distant, you’re likely to do everything in that area.

It’s kind of like how I’ve grown up where I live in. I don’t venture too far outside of it because I already have what I need in the area.

We stopped at Citta Mall for lunch since we’ve not been there yet. This was the 2nd mall we hit. However, I felt like I won’t know what’s available here unless I literally walked the whole place. You can’t see all store signs from the open air car park.

I don't even recall seeing a Harvey Norman signage

We went to lunch at a restaurant we’ve not been before called; Baci. The food was only so-so. My wedges on the side were tough and cold, as though it’s been pre-cooked and left aside. Drinks on the other hand was pretty good. Their Lemon Cooler (lemonade) was really refreshing.

Note though, prices were on the pricier side.

Quarter roast chicken

Order of quarter roast chicken, aglio olio with added mushroom, lemon cooler and ice lemon tea came up to RM48.

Wannabe property investors

Once our tummies were full, we paid a visit to a property show gallery nearby to kay-poh. The moment we walked in, agents were on the top of their toes to sign you in, answer your questions and gear you towards investing in the property.

It was really good service yet intimidating, because I could feel the vibe that they really wanted you to buy. I’m not sure if all property galleries were this way, but I guess that’s how they’d really close a sale.

So by the time we got home, it was really nice to finally not have to drive everywhere. It was finally time to kick back and relax. Especially in this crazy heat weather now.

Tip the scale for once

The best thing about being in a business platform with many other business owners is that you can call them your business colleagues. Some of which I know more closely and have become friends. Thus, I can brag that I’ve got around 500 business colleagues which I network with for business. πŸ˜€

Then, one of them recently co-wrote a book and released it for pre-orders. It’s stories detailing the dirty tricks business owners have used to win business. Be it under the table, sexual favours and other unethical means of securing the wanted accounts.

In conjunction with this book launching, I’ve participated in their contest giveaway on Facebook. The rules are simple. They snapped my photo and included my selected caption. All I have to do is get as many people to click Like on this photo.

Ta-dah~

And yes, that is how I look like when I suit up. Very different, no? By the way, ignore the Dragonball hair. It’s like that whenever my hair is rather thick and it needs trimming. It was deem a bad hair day. πŸ˜›

Now, I know I’m no chic. And it sounds far fetched to even go head-to-head against one, but can’t blame me for trying. So, if you’re a person (guy or girl) who wants to tip the scales for once, please follow this link to the photo on Facebook and click Like!

Is the big bang theory too smart for people?

Ever since catching part of an episode from The Big Bang Theory at my cousin’s place during Chinese New Year this year, I’ve hunted down Season 1 to 4. Plus, I was reminded of the show again during one of the WebcampKL meetups, when a snippet was shown by Felix that night.

Let me tell you that this is no ordinary comedy and you may need an outrageous IQ to fully enjoy the show. Back in school, physics to me was an oversized man who just talked and talked. Or, how shall I put it, blah blah blah. Yes, science was never made fun. Sigh.

Maybe Mr.Bean would've made a better teacher

So, anyway. When I was watching the 1st episode with Ariel, I thought I wouldn’t enjoy the series because you could say, it made me feel really dumb whenever scientific stuff came up. Thankfully, writers were smart enough to throw in a hot chic, whose character’s IQ wasn’t of a braniac but a normal person. Phew.

Don't have to guess who's Penny here, right?

There was an episode where I couldn’t really stand Sheldon. It’s the dude on the left in the image above, if you’re still guessing. Sheesh. I don’t even know how could you have thought he was a Penny.

Anyway, being smart is one thing, being really ignorant and obnoxious for being smart is another. Many times I could’ve imagine murdering someone like Sheldon over and over. It’s really a miracle someone with that characteristic has friends and they’ve stuck by him.

While I’m still early in the series, I hope Sheldon’s character develops further and he doesn’t get worst.

And it shudders me to think on this planet, in some building, on some floor, there really is a person (or persons) exactly like Sheldon. Brrr.
