Uniqlo Malaysia Opening Day Photos and Video

Malaysian’s 2nd home no doubt, can be shopping malls.

Brave the queue or test your patience

Me and Hawk headed to Malaysia’s first Uniqlo store opening at Fahrenheit 88 (formerly KL Plaza). We arrived around 10:30am and stepping out of lift, were greeted by the throngs of bodies already queuing. Plus, it wasn’t just any queue.

It was a queue which spanned from the front entrance, into the concourse, to the back of the mall and back out again to the main entrance of the Uniqlo Malaysia outlet. Within 30 minutes, the morning queue grew till people started forming a line to the wall.

Though one of the good things which happened was the spillover business to kiosks nearby. The kiosk with yellow, orange and white balloons (I think) sold some gelato to patrons queuing for Uniqlo. πŸ˜›

In the morning, some VIPs were there to officiate the opening. And I heard someone mention, apparently one of the VIPs was Maya Karin. *shrug*

VIPs going down escalatorAnd before I forget, even after you’ve reached outside, there’s still 1 more queue before you can step into Uniqlo Malaysia.

uniqlo crowd outside and insideAs the crowd started moving, onlookers started gathering outside Level 2 of Uniqlo Malaysia. Only to peek inside the store and envy the shoppers inside who’re making purchases. Honestly, me and Hawk were thinking, why on Earth are they torturing themselves? LOL!

Drinks on the house

Some lucky people were given free drinks courtesy from one of the F&B outlets in Fahrenheit 88. I don’t remember the name but they’re located on Level 2.

Some chucked aside like it was someone’s house. But what bothered me most was a lurking stench. Thinking to myself, someone had really really REALLY bad body odor. Yuck!

Inside Uniqlo Malaysia at Fahrenheit 88

In terms of staff, they had enough and Uniqlo prepared their Malaysian team well. They were still mindful to help customers find sizes, even in this chaotic and smelly environment. Kudos! Plus, you’ll never not know where’s the back of the line – here’s why.

uniqlo malaysia staff holding signCome to think of it. They should’ve placed one of these staff in the mall, together with the sign. This way, everyone can tell where’s the start (or end) of the line.

In the Uniqlo Malaysia store, you’ll find garments from simple T-shirts to formal wear to winter wear. In my view, Uniqlo’s line of clothes is for the simple and functional consumer at an affordable price with awesome quality. The fabric used for most of their garments were soft and comfortable. Including their UJeans! πŸ˜€

And here’s what really happened.

Me and Hawk didn’t queue the moment we reached. Instead, we observed the crowd and estimated the time it took at the time to reach point A to point B. The crowd like this may have spooked us off a bit. πŸ˜›

As it was nearing 12pm, we decided to hunt for lunch and later come to back to re-assess the situation. The line was shorter but it was at its shortest much later.

In our hunt for lunch, we spotted the YES cube and troopers.

YES is the new 4G broadband offered by YTL Communications.

We stood in line from 1:25pm inside the mall only to reach the outside queue about 2 hours and 30 minutes later. Once inside, we rummaged through what’s left of the t-shirts on the ground floor before heading to the Men’s section on the 3rd floor. If you’re looking for UJeans, don’t waste your time on the ground floor. There are shelves of it upstairs! πŸ˜‰

If you’re going to use the fitting room, estimate 30 minutes to 1 hour wait time. And for UJeans, you’ll want to try all of them irregardless of it looking the same. Because 1 of the pairs I bought fitted differently compared to the others. Which is weird, I know.

And here’s a very important message:

Uniqlo Malaysia now opens at 11:00am and closes at 8:00pm.

Plus, I read on their Facebook page they discourage patrons queuing from 7:30pm.

Which I suppose is understandable, thinking back to the mess they’ve to sort out before closing time. In addition, it’s a long weekend, so you can expect a crowd these 3 days.

Fahrenheit 88 parking rates

  • Monday to Thursday: RM3 first hour and RM2 every additional hour
  • Friday to Sunday: RM3 first hour and RM3 every additional hour (ouch!)
  • Maximum per day: RM15 flat rate

You can get RM1 off parking if you spend more than RM100 in a single receipt. This needs to be verified at the concierge services counter located towards behdind mall.

But I paid the painful maximum rate of RM15 yesterday parking from 10:30am to 6:00pm. My advice, take the train to Bukit Bintang and walk. Unless you’re only expecting to spend less than 1 hour there.

Must Read: Time spent at Uniqlo Malaysia store

  • 2 to 3 hours average queuing time to get into Uniqlo Malaysia
  • 1 to 2 hours shopping time depending what you’re buying (best to plan ahead)
  • 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes queue for fitting room (you may find women on men’s floor)
  • 5 minutes to 1 hour waiting time at cashier (depending on crowd)

To the patrons today, good luck. To Uniqlo Malaysia and the staff, gambatte! πŸ˜€

  • Fleece collection: RM49.90 (November 4 – 18, 2010)
  • Free tote bag by spending Rm200 in a single receipt. (November 4 – 7, 2010)

And it’s subject to while stocks last. Me and Hawk personally went for the jeans only. Plus, when I asked a Uniqlo staff, he said the offer only applied to Regular Straight Fit. It would be disappointing to find this was untrue right now.

But overall, I love the outlet and clothes. It’s going onto my regular places to shop list. πŸ™‚

My meeting with Zee Avi

Well, I definitely wasn’t happy forking out RM15 for parking to KL Life Centre at Zee Avi’s concert. But paying for her performance and her debut album; Zee Avi, was every penny well spent.

And the pennies were lucky ones. I won an invitation to the exclusive Meet & Greet session with the sultry voiced artiste; Zee Avi. πŸ˜€

Okay. I know most of you are not here to read what I thought of the Meet & greet session. So I’ll save it for later. Here are the selected photos taken by me on the day. Oh, photos have larger (800×600 ratio) versions so click ’em to view ’em. Enjoy!

shot of the day
I'd say this was the best shot of the day

The event was suppose to start at 8pm but it only began around 8:30pm. There were actually 2 sessions because one of the fans I met the day told me, there was a newspaper advertisement saying anyone with a Zee Avi album may come to get an autograph too.

Because of this, the sessions were split into an autograph session followed by the meet & greet session. I’d say it was pretty well organized though weird because we queued on the right to sign in then moved to the left to enter for autographs later.

This was my first ever autograph session in my life. So embarrassing moment came when Zee Avi stared at me, waiting for me to tell her my name so she could write it on the cover. Though I was glad she did ask me:

What’s your name, luv?

*swoon* πŸ™‚ LOL!

Once I got the autograph, I joined the rest of the non-media photographers gathered at the middle entrance trying our best to snap a photo of Zee Avi. Before the event, I did ask the hot Universal lady if photos were permitted during the meet & greet. She apologized and said personal photographs weren’t allowed.

However, can’t blame me if I joined the revolution which started. All I wanted were photos for this blog and spread word to people who still hasn’t heard of Zee Avi.

And I was really lucky to have grabbed these photos first. Because moments later, non-media were disallowed to get near the middle entrance to snap any photos of Zee Avi. Alas, some just stood further away. πŸ˜›

Once the autograph session was done, the invitees were asked to form lines of 10 people to go in and meet Zee Avi. We shook her hand and chatted for less than a minute before we were asked to huddle together like a school yearbook photo. No personal photos were taken here because of time shortage and it wasn’t allowed.

The group photos were going to be emailed to us and posted to the Universal Music Malaysia Facebook page later. However, I’m still waiting for the photo.

And I just had a thought, how will they identify which group we belonged to if there was more than 1 group photo with Zee Avi. Uh-oh.

Well, I’ll share the photo here once it’s been distributed. In the meantime, I’ve published the full album of Zee Avi photos on my photoblog and here’s the video again of the concert night. πŸ™‚

See you when you came back home again, Zee. πŸ™‚

Updated: March 25, 2010 – 8:35pm

Universal Music finally uploaded the photo to their Facebook. This was the photo from the album. Though I did some minor touch up.

Zee Avi and Us

Welcome home, Zee.

Last night was a concert by Zee Avi. And I know, I know, you may be asking; who is she? Well, trust me. My Dad could give the most random of answers when I told him I was going for her concert.

Zee Ar Vee? (CRV)

He was joking. But I do know, he’d definitely enjoy her music because he likes the blues and jazz too. I went to watch the concert with Ariel and we were a bit kiasu. Reached the KL Life Centre by 6pm. And already, some people were lining up. No surprise, huh.

Here’s a pictorial experience of the concert. πŸ™‚

And that was what the concert was like. What? Not feeling it? Okay, fine. Here’s a YouTube video for the less imaginative.

P.S.: Did you catch the blooper at the end of the video? πŸ˜‰

The crowd was pretty decent. The main hall was filled while some strayed further to the sides so they could stand on higher ground to catch a glimpse of Zee Avi. The upper deck looked full with everyone sitting on benches you find in a basketball arena.

There was also a VIP area. And Ariel told me she saw Marina Mahathir too. When I turned to look, she was there with her daughter and husband. Then, I also noticed none other than Mr.Tony seated on the sofas.

Security was very well managed by Fat Boyz. Not only were you frisked for any weapons but while leaving, I noticed many DSLR handlers had to claim their batteries back at a table. Good try people.

During the concert, JessicaT was also asked by a security near the stage to handover her camera. However, she flashed the guy her crew tag and was left alone after that. Though there was 1 girl who managed to smuggle her camera in, as she pushed people aside to come center front – where I was standing.

Besides that, the performance was superb. Me and Ariel really love artistes who sound like themselves in real life compared to CDs. To me, that’s true talent and being yourself.

I was so impressed with Zee Avi, I bought her original CD as my support to her. I love her voice, her music and her personality. Definitely looking forward to the next album or when she’s down again.

If you didn’t know, Zee Avi was picked up by the record label; Monotone/Brushfire Records and is now in US. Her next tour stop is Australia.

But if you want to catch this petite artiste before that, she’ll be at a Meet and Greet session at Rock Corner, Gardens on Tuesday, 8pm. Though I think pre-requisite was you need to have her CD.

Oh, I’ve got but 1 dissatisfaction. The big momma standing beside me with her daughter was drowning me with her perfume. It was musky and strong. *blech*

Anyway, welcome home, Zee.

Zee Avi Live in Kuala Lumpur at KL Life Centre

I just got back from the Zee Avi concert after having to satisfy my temperament hunger. It was pure sultry sounds and she was simply awesome. I’ll leave you with a teaser for now.

photo

Coming up are more photos during the performance. And some videos of her and the Malaysian crowd giving their full support by singing along. It was excellent I tell you.

Thank God I’m not a football-holic. πŸ˜›

The full concert coverage with photos and videos has been published; welcome home, Zee.

May’N Big Wave Asia Tour in Malaysia

The last concert I attended was Linkin Park in Kuala Lumpur, Yes, they were here before our smart *sses banned them. The other so-called concert I went for was Bunkface at Yahoo Youreka.

And this year, I started it of with May’N Big Wave (Waaaaave!!) Asia tour in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I was lucky and fast enough to win a pair of free tickets from Nuffnang.

The concert was held at the KL Life Centre. The same place Bunkface performed and the same place I pay RM9.00 phreaking bucks for parking. Bleh.

Anywho, when I reached the place at 6:00pm a line already had formed! From the top all the way to the ground floor with a turn to the back of the building. I didn’t seriously expect to find this many fans. LOL!

While waiting, we were all asked if we wanted to purchase glow sticks (RM5 each) and the official tour t-shirt (RM48). Then by around 7:05pm, the line started filling up the venue.

photo

The show was only starting at 8:00pm. So what do you do to kill time with a bunch of friends? You form a May’N glow stick signage on the floor.

photo

Some of the photographers in the media box came out for a quick snap too. One of them I know is from the LowYat website. Talk about how fans can really pull the media out of their boxes. πŸ˜‰

As the lights dimmed, the crowd cheered on May’N and her dancers. This was definitely where my iPhone can only deliver so much quality in low-lighting.

photo

The performance really rocked the room with huge bass sounds and near deafening pitches. Personally, I felt the music was a little too loud and it drowned out some vocals. But May’N definitely had lots of fun on stage with the Malaysian audience.

photo

She shone like a star – literally. Really loved what the iPhone did on its own for this shot.

And as much as I’d have liked to photograph with my gear, the concert had a strict policy of no photography and video recording. Someone on the floor was caught and pulled out from the crowd for this.

Well, I still find it silly for event organizers to disallow photography. Because at Β nearly every corner, there’ll be someone with a DSLR – even a kid.

I told my friend on the way back, the organizers or management could have a clause not preventing photography but strictly warning against selling of these images or causing damage of the artiste’s image.

Right now, a DSLR is in very high demand and affordable. Couple it with a bunch of social media enthusiasts, you’ll have a long tail of publicity not only of the event but the artiste. Us, (bloggers) get pictures for our posts and keepsake. Win-win.

Oh well, I’m definitely looking forward for more Japanese artistes down here. So, when’s FLO, bump of chicken, Orange Range and others coming down?! I want a media pass! πŸ˜€

At the event, I also found Dustyhawk, Valho (I think) and Fapping Cat.
